Airlifting of passengers from cruise ships

booking cruises

A passenger who was airlifted out of a cruise in Port Canaveral on Tuesday, 10 April, Florida, was transported in stable conditions to Holmes Regional Medical Center. The Coast Guard reported that a cruise ship passenger called watchstanders via satellite phone to say he had an illness and needed immediate medical attention. The Jayhawk was sent to the scene. A man was airlifted safely from the ship which was located 230 mile off the coast.

A man who fell overboard from a cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico last week says he was determined to make it out alive. James Michael Grimes - who went missing Thanksgiving Eve - told ABC News about his experience treading water for 20 hours until he was rescued.

He was on board the Carnival Valor, a cruise ship currently sailing between Miami and Cozumel in Mexico. He was a passenger aboard the ship, which he had been traveling on since November.

Crews from the Carnival Valor and the Coast Guard worked together during the search to locate him. They sent drones, boats, and aerial support. Around 8 p.m. local, the Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter found him 20 miles south of Southwest Pass and the Gulf of Mexico.

He was able identify himself. He also could walk and speak. He showed signs that he was dehydrated, hypothermic and in shock. He was airlifted into the Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans. Once stabilized, he received emergency medical care at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport.

It is the second time in this year that a passenger has been airlifted from a ship. A man aboard the Norwegian cruise liner Gem was also airlifted due to a medical issue. The Coast Guard did not provide any additional information about the conditions of either passenger.

The cruise ship operator needs to be capable of providing emergency medical attention in the case of an illness. It can be devastating to experience an illness during a vacation, which is meant to be relaxing.

The other reason is because a cruise ship operator has to have a rescue plan in place should someone become ill. The company needs to prepare this plan before the cruise, so the passenger can be taken to the hospital if needed.

A number of cruise lines have also taken on the responsibility to help refugees in the Caribbean. Carnival Cruise Line has saved more than 40 refugee in the Caribbean this week. Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady saved 18 refugees in December and Celebrity Beyond 19 refugees earlier this month.
